Technical Committee

Technical Committee

Since 1968, SEMA has dedicated itself to achieving and maintaining technical excellence. This commitment forms the core of our association, with every group and member adhering to strict, measurable standards that have set the benchmark for industry safety. The dedication of our SEMA Technical Committee has ensured the industry can work to a standardised set of technical documents, codes and best practice guidance that extend over the lifetime of your storage equipment. Our work has influenced key Health & Safety guidance at a European and National level.

SEMA guidance is not only for technicians and engineers but is crucial advice for anyone involved in the management and safety of warehouse operations. Paired with comprehensive training programs, these publications create solid frameworks for the safe design, installation, and use of storage equipment. This ensures that safety and technical excellence are integral to every aspect of warehouse management.

Key areas of our work include:

Design Codes

The SEMA Technical Committee develops Design Codes which cover both pallet racking and shelving systems. Suppliers, installers and warehouse owners use the Codes throughout the design, installation and usage stages. This ensures the racking will fulfil its requirement, withstand the loads and the manufacture meets industry standards. The codes cover every stage of your racking.

Technical Bulletins

Technical bulletins are free, easy-to-understand guidance documents which offer key technical advice for anyone working with pallet racking and suppliers. The bulletins cover areas such as types of racking repairs, rack protection, design standards, load notices and second-hand racking.

Load Notices

A SEMA load notice is an essential safety sign required on storage equipment. The sign's intent is to allow workers in the warehouse to operate our storage equipment safely. The load notice provides information on general safety instructions, use and limitations of the structure and correctly loading the racking.
